Engineer Senior Software Engineer II - Enterprise Foundations at Instacart

Design and ship complex backend systems for Instacart's enterprise retailer platform, serving as technical lead for multi-quarter infrastructure and integration work streams.

Senior Hybrid Posted about 22 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

We’re transforming the grocery industry

At Instacart, we invite the world to share love through food because we believe everyone should have access to the food they love and more time to enjoy it together. Where others see a simple need for grocery delivery, we see exciting complexity and endless opportunity to serve the varied needs of our community. We work to deliver an essential service that customers rely on to get their groceries and household goods, while also offering safe and flexible earnings opportunities to Instacart Personal Shoppers.

Instacart has become a lifeline for millions of people, and we’re building the team to help push our shopping cart forward. If you’re ready to do the best work of your life, come join our table.

Instacart is a Flex First team

There’s no one-size fits all approach to how we do our best work. Our employees have the flexibility to choose where they do their best work—whether it’s from home, an office, or your favorite coffee shop—while staying connected and building community through regular in-person events. Learn more about our flexible approach to where we work.

Overview

Enterprise Foundations is the engineering team responsible for the architectural and integration work that allows Instacart’s Retailer Platform to scale across the world’s largest grocers. Our work spans omnichannel integrations — bringing products like FoodStorm catering and Caper Carts onto unified Instacart platform rails — enterprise extensibility (sandbox environments, configuration systems, retailer-facing tooling), and the cross-cutting data isolation work that allows Instacart’s ML and Data Engineering teams to safely build bespoke models on top of the platform. As Instacart’s enterprise retail business expands to hundreds of partner brands and new international markets, this team’s work is foundational to how the platform matures.

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to own and ship one of the team’s most complex multi-quarter work-streams — at the seam of omnichannel identity, international storefront search expansions, and partner-owned integrations that we ultimately operate ourselves. You’ll be the technical DRI for your area: framing the problem, designing the systems, driving the rollout, and codifying the patterns so the rest of Enterprise Platform can adopt them without your direct involvement. You’ll work closely with Staff engineers on the team who set the team-wide architectural thesis, and partner across Connected Stores, Professional Services, Commerce, Search, Data Engineering, and ML to land integrations that hold up across organizational boundaries.

About the Job

  • Own a multi-quarter integration workstream end to end — for example, unified customer identity across FoodStorm and Storefront Pro, international storefront and search expansion for enterprise retailers, or consolidation of bespoke retailer-vertical services onto shared Instacart platform rails — from problem framing through design, implementation, rollout, and deprecation of legacy paths.
  • Drive the technical direction for your area: write the ERDs, propose the options, make and defend the trade-off calls, and bring partner teams along through design reviews and written artifacts that read clearly for first-time readers.
  • Lead vendor and cross-team integrations where Instacart will eventually own the system — push for the right observability, fallback behavior, and cost/latency guardrails up front, and challenge partner designs early rather than inheriting them at handoff.
  • Build reusable patterns, frameworks, and templates that other engineers across Enterprise Foundations and adjacent teams adopt with minimal hand-holding; treat “system at a glance” docs and migration runbooks as first-class deliverables.
  • Operate hands-on as a senior individual contributor on the highest-leverage technical work in your area; raise the bar on design quality, code quality, observability, and operational rigor.
  • Mentor more junior engineers in your area, delegate well-defined implementation pieces while retaining overall technical ownership, and act as a credible technical peer to senior and staff engineers in adjacent organizations.

About You

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of backend software engineering experience, with a track record of owning complex, multi-quarter projects end to end as a senior individual contributor.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as the technical DRI for cross-team workstreams — framing problems proactively, proposing options with clear recommendations, identifying risks early, and driving execution through to adoption.
  • Experience designing and shipping distributed systems and integrations that span multiple services, teams, or external partners in a production environment with real customers.
  • Strong proficiency with backend technologies in production environments (e.g., Ruby/Rails, Python, Go, or similar), along with relational databases, distributed data systems, and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS or GCP).
  • Track record of producing durable technical artifacts — ERDs, design docs, runbooks, and reusable patterns — that other engineers can build on without ongoing direct support.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in ambiguous, high-growth environments where partner roadmaps and integration commitments are still maturing, with a record of driving clarity and forward motion through that ambiguity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct domain experience in commerce platforms, omnichannel retail, OMS, POS, catering systems, or connected-store / in-store technology.
  • Experience with customer identity, account linking, or SSO integrations across multiple consumer-facing surfaces.
  • Experience building or scaling search, retrieval, or ranking systems, including integrations with third-party search providers.
  • Background working on international expansion — localization, data residency, multi-region infrastructure, or in-country compliance requirements.
  • Experience leading vendor or partner-owned integrations where the system is ultimately operated and owned by the integrating team.
  • Experience designing per-tenant configuration, isolation, and extensibility for multi-tenant enterprise platforms.

Engineer Software Architect at PayJunction

Designs payment systems, leads complex engineering initiatives, writes production Java, and guides other engineers from concept through deployment.

Lead Hybrid Posted 5 days ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

We read every application. No AI screening. A real person reviews your materials.

Job Summary

PayJunction is seeking a Software Architect to design and build the enterprise features and payment integrations our partners rely on to move billions of dollars a year, taking open-ended problems from a blank page to production while still writing Java yourself.

Why PayJunction?

PayJunction is relentless and emphatical about helping others.  We exist to drive the success of our partners.  Specifically, the developers who connect to us, businesses who process payments through us, and all of our team members who work with us at PayJunction.

We believe dreams inspire people to start a business, and others to partner with them.  While building dreams, entrepreneurs and business professionals will face many challenges along the way. We believe great partners can make all the difference.

We are your dream partner.

Your success is our success.

Our dream is to help you realize yours.

We exist to drive the success of our partners.  We do this by fundamentally changing the way you transact with others.  We just happen to make great payment systems.  If you love helping others succeed, in a culture that celebrates perfecting your craft, consider partnering with us.

Location

PayJunction takes a Flex First approach to work environments. This means that our team members can choose to work from our Santa Barbara office or remotely from home. We ensure that everyone has the resources and equipment to work where they feel most productive. We trust our teams to make the best decision for their work environment. Mission

Our Engineering team’s mission is to design, develop, and maintain the products, technology, and systems that drive our partners’ success.

Vision

Thousands of partners love and rely on our platform to make payments simple.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead open-ended initiatives from a blank page to production with Product and Engineering leadership, breaking the problem down, directing other engineers, and making the calls that keep the team moving.
  • Personally design the highest-risk systems end to end, writing design docs clear enough to build from, with requirements, trade-offs, and failure modes stated up front.
  • Stay hands-on: write production Java every sprint, review pull requests promptly, and hold work to a test strategy built for high-risk payment paths.
  • Mentor senior engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and pairing, growing the team’s design capability so not every decision runs through you.
  • Architect enterprise capabilities such as SSO, role-based access, audit trails, and multi-merchant hierarchy, plus versioned APIs partners can build on without breaking changes.
  • Keep the core platform processor-agnostic and our processor integrations performing optimally, from message mapping through reversals and settlement reconciliation.
  • Design for reliability and PCI from the start: define SLOs and monitoring, remove single points of failure, lead root-cause analysis, and shrink PCI scope by design.
  • Raise the team’s delivery velocity with AI-assisted development, setting review and security guardrails for AI-generated code.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering, with hands-on ownership of production systems.
  • 5+ years of architecture experience as an Architect, Staff, or Principal Engineer, owning designs that span multiple services or teams.
  • 5+ years of Java, including web frameworks and the JVM ecosystem, with production Java written in the last 12 months.
  • 5+ years mentoring senior and mid-level engineers through code review, design review, and pairing; formal people management not required.
  • Production experience with AWS, Linux (Ubuntu/Debian), relational databases (MySQL preferred), CI/CD (Jenkins or comparable), infrastructure as code (Puppet or similar), and observability tooling (Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, or comparable).
  • Designed and operated a high-availability transactional system where downtime or data loss had direct financial or customer impact.
  • Currently uses AI coding assistants or agents (Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, or comparable) in day-to-day production work.
  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent applied experience.
  • Preferred: payments or fintech experience such as card processing, gateways, or acquiring; experience designing within a PCI DSS-regulated environment.

Digital Outcomes.

Job Description

Sutherland is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to join our team in Bucharest, Romania!

In this role you’ll get to:

  • Collaborate with the team to understand business requirements and configure solutions accordingly
  • Test and validate configurations to ensure they meet the business and functional expectations.
  • Design and develop Proof of Concepts (POCs), working closely with senior engineers to validate feasibility and effectiveness.
  • Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date configuration documentation.
  • Stay updated with the latest trends, tools, and technologies.
  • Recommend enhancements or optimizations based on feedback

Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years combined, split across a technical configuration/implementation role (Configuration Engineer, Software Engineer, or similar) and client-facing solution delivery or presales.
  • Knows the low-code/agentic-platform competitive set (Appian, Camunda, IBM, Pega, or comparable conversational AI/orchestration tools).
  • Real hands-on time building conversational flows from scratch
  • Has configured or worked closely with an agent orchestrator
  • Comfortable setting up and iterating on Knowledge Bases — document ingestion, chunking, prompt tuning against expected Q&A pairs and failure analysis.
  • Has sat in the estimation/scoping loop — taking sales-validated use cases, judging technical feasibility, and aligning on a delivery timeline before customer kickoff.
  • Fluent enough to write code inside the platform and work with APIs to integrate third party or client systems.
  • Comfortable owning a solution end-to-end in front of PO, PM, and architect stakeholders, and translating business requirements into working configuration without hand-holding.
  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Business Information or a related field.
  • Familiarity with Python.

Major Advantages for candidates having the following:

  • Direct experience with HTML, CSS, and Angular concepts, or a broader front-end/BPMN background.
  • Has run 2–3 concurrent client implementations with shifting priorities.
  • Has carried some post-kickoff ownership (Account Manager adjacent) — staying accountable to the customer after handoff rather than disappearing once the build starts

Additional Information

All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.

Designs and implements production GenAI architectures, proofs of concept, fine-tuned models, and LLM solutions for enterprise customers.

What this role involves

REQ ID: FEQ227R147

Location: Germany (Remote/Hybrid) - will require travel across Europe

Recruiter: Dina Hussain

About the Role

We are looking for a Lead Solution Architect focused on Generative AI to support our EMEA Emerging Digital Natives and Startups business unit — one of the fastest-moving, most technically ambitious patches in EMEA. Our customers are digital-native and cloud-native companies who build on the frontier: they adopt GenAI early, scale fast, and expect their technical partners to be as sharp as their own engineers.

You will be the go-to expert our Account Teams and customers turn to when a GenAI or LLM use case needs to move from an ambitious idea to a production-grade reality across our high-growth accounts.

This is a highly technical, customer-facing individual contributor role for someone who lives at the frontier of applied GenAI. You will shape architectures, prove out the hard problems, challenge and influence customer roadmaps, and raise the GenAI capability of the entire EMEA Emerging DNB field organisation.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as the deep technical authority on Generative AI, LLMs, and applied machine learning for the EMEA Emerging DNB business unit, supporting the most strategic and complex customer engagements across our digital-native and born-in-the-cloud accounts.
  • Partner with our EMEA Emerging DNB Solutions Architects, Solutions Engineers, and Account teams to scope, design, and de-risk GenAI use cases — from retrieval-augmented generation and agentic systems to fine-tuning and evaluation.
  • Build hands-on proofs of concept and reference implementations that operationalise large-scale LLM and deep learning workloads on Databricks (Mosaic AI, MLflow, Model Serving, Vector Search, Unity Catalog governance), tuned to the fast iteration cycles Emerging DNB customers expect.
  • Lead fine-tuning and model-customisation engagements on open LLMs (e.g., Llama-family models), including judge-based and label-efficient evaluation approaches for domains where quality and safety are paramount.
  • Act as a bridge to Product and Engineering — channel field and customer feedback into the roadmap and represent the roadmap back to the field.
  • Enable and mentor the broader EMEA Emerging DNB Field Engineering team through workshops, reference architectures, and internal enablement, multiplying GenAI expertise across our ~70-person SA/SE organisation.
  • Represent Databricks externally as a technical thought leader — conference talks (e.g., Data + AI Summit), blogs, and customer executive briefings.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong understanding of the LLM landscape, including leading proprietary and open-source models and providers, with the ability to differentiate their capabilities, trade-offs, and suitability for different use cases, and to articulate a clear, informed point of view (POV) to customers.
  • Deep expertise in the modern GenAI stack: LLM application patterns (RAG, agents, tool use), fine-tuning and model customization, prompt and evaluation engineering, and LLM guardrails/safety.
  • Strong foundations in machine learning and deep learning, including distributed training, GPU workloads, and the full MLOps lifecycle (tracking, registry, serving, monitoring).
  • Proficiency in Python and the ML ecosystem (PyTorch/Transformers, MLflow, Spark), and comfort building production-quality reference implementations.
  • Experience with the Databricks platform — or the ability to ramp on it quickly — including Mosaic AI, Model Serving, Vector Search, and Unity Catalog. Cloud experience across AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Excellent communication and consultative skills: able to earn the trust of both hands-on engineers and senior technical executives, and to explain complex GenAI trade-offs clearly.
  • A track record of technical leadership and mentorship — someone who elevates the people around them.
  • Comfort operating at the pace of digital-native and high-growth customers, where speed, iteration, and technical credibility win the deal.
  • Based in the United Kingdom and able to work across EMEA time zones, with willingness to travel to customer sites within the region as needed.
  • Background helping digital-native customers build data and ML solutions (e.g., prior experience at a data/ML platform or consulting vendor) is a strong plus.

Nice to Have

  • Public technical presence: conference speaking, published talks, blogs, or open-source contributions in the ML/GenAI space.
  • Domain depth in a regulated or high-stakes industry (healthcare/life sciences, financial services) where model quality, evaluation, and safety are critical.
  • Experience partnering with Product and Engineering teams to influence roadmap.

Why This Role

You will work on the hardest and most exciting GenAI problems our EMEA Emerging DNB customers have — companies building the future in real time — with the platform and the people to actually solve them, not just advise. You’ll shape how one of EMEA’s highest-growth business units adopts Generative AI, influence the direction of the product, and build a public profile as a recognised expert in the field. This is the role for a builder and a teacher, who wants their expertise to have outsized impact.
